It was a quiet Friday night with surprisingly little traffic across the city. Josh said we could go anywhere for dinner. Anywhere? Well, anywhere considering it was already 7pm on a Friday night.
We finally decided on The General Muir. We hadn't been in a while and ... I had seen on Twitter that they had a special with morels. Woot.
We sat at the bar as usual. Todd came out to say hi before we ordered and I asked him what we should not miss. He mentioned the open-faced morel sammich and, since I had never had it, the fried chicken which was only available on Friday nights. When the chef recommends it, how can you not order it?
Here's the description Todd tweeted about this dish: Opened face sandwich of braised morels, sunny quail eggs, Liver and shallot pain perdu, with a broken chicken jus. It just sounds awesome, doesn't it?
It was delicious. And so generous on the morels. I wanted you to see it as I was eating it so you could really appreciate the awesomeness of it.
Josh also got the kale salad with green goddess dressing, but it looks the same and I didn't shoot it.
Shelley gifted us this fried avocado that we had never ordered before. It's probably a sign when the owners of a restaurant know what you have or have not yet ordered at their place. Anyway, this was a beautiful dish, even if my picture does not do it justice -- and I didn't help with the vertical layout.
Light and delicious.
Josh got the fish, which I think was trout. He was so happy with the crisp skin.
And for me: the fried chicken. It comes with coleslaw (okay) and peaches with basil (fantastic). The chicken I liked a lot. It was crispy, tasty, and it came with a white wine-tabasco sauce for dipping. Josh was nice and said that mine is better, but I thought it was pretty solid with a great, consistent crust.
