Bishoku

We're still exploring our new neighborhood. I had noticed that Bishoku bishokusushi.com was close by and I remembered the name from food blogs. We had a free night, so we headed over rather late for us (close to 8.30 on a weeknight). The restaurant was relatively quiet. There were two older Japanese men sitting separately at the sushi bar. There were a couple tables that were occupied. We were seated next to one that ended up being the louder of the two.

To start, we ordered the chicken livers and the octopus wasabi. The chicken livers were given high praise on the menu as one of their most popular dishes. Cooked with soy sauce and ginger, the taste was familiar indeed. Though I found the livers to be a tad overcooked (though perhaps stewed, but still a little chewy).

The octopus wasabi, however, that was absolutely delicious. Raw octopus marinated in wasabi. I could eat that a lot.

We asked to order a sashimi omakase, even though it wasn't on the menu. Our server seemed mildly surprised and then asked about a price point and what we liked to eat. We told her that we were relatively adventurous, but we did have our limits. She asked if we liked uni and when we said we did, she seemed excited.

The sushi looked pretty good and tasty pretty good. The sashimi itself was sometimes oddly or inconsistently shaped which was a little odd, but it was good nonetheless. The plate was relatively tame. Bonito -- which we really think was mackerel perhaps, was the most adventurous item on the plate. Well, we are in Sandy Springs, after all.

Although it wasn't on the menu, I had certainly read about the merits of Bishoku's ramen. We ordered it. They have two options: tonkatsu or miso. I opted for tonkatsu.

The ramen was good, but certainly I've gotten used to the flavors at Taka. The broth was delicious. The pork was good. The noodles had a good bite. And the serving size! We each had two bowls from the serving bowl and at $9.

Overall, I think Bishoku is nice to have as a close option. I'm not sure if could come close to satisfying us like Taka, but perhaps over time we will find our favorites there. Like that octopus!
