I decided to try to grow from seed this year. I think it's an experiment that will go either very well or very badly with few options in between.
I bought a selection of seeds from Hastings and finally got all the stuff to start them off in the Aerogarden inside.
I planted them around 4/16 and let them go. Here they are a week old. The flowers sprouted first.
Here we are at the end of the month which means about two weeks old. The flowers are still the tallest, but one of the cucumbers has a decent size and the tomatoes have sprouted.
This is one day later than the picture above. It's amazing to see how fast they grow.
Here they are about three weeks old. The tomatoes were so tall that they were stealing light from other plants. I transplanted them all. Some of the flowers were super climby so I staked them.
Here are the vegetables transplanted and out on the screened porch.
In preparation for more transplanting, I moved all the herbs from the earth gardens to pots. Apparently, most of the herbs do well with a little suffering and I need those earth gardens for my more thirsty vegetables like cucumbers, squash, and tomatoes.
I'm happy to see that it looks like everything has transplanted well: oregano, mint, parsley, chives.
I had to leave some mint in the earth garden and it is just super thriving. It's funny because everyone says that mint grows itself and it never did for me. Unless I want it to not grow, of course.
The muscadines have come back and I'm glad to see it.
The thyme is back too. We used it a lot last year and it got pretty thin and scraggly over the winter and I was worried. But it's back and looking great!
The tomatoes are once again taking over all the light. The herbs (parsley and cilantro) are doing well, too. Unfortunately, aphids starting attacking the jalapeno plant in the back left and they are on everything now. I had used a soap mixture on them before but it hasn't helped. Today I'll need to wash them all off and plant them and hope that helps.
Here are the vegetables on the screened porch. They look ready for prime time so I just moved them outside. I actually need to plant them in their earth boxes but it's rainy and I'm not feeling that well and I need to plan for next week's party. So we will see. But at least all my gardening stuff is in.
