Josh had a work thing, so I headed over to Shoya Izakaya myself. The restaurant was packed but the bar was pretty empty. I got a corner seat closest to the kitchen, where I was able to watch the action on the grills and at the sushi bar.
It actually seemed kind of hard to get consistent service at the bar by yourself so my experience was a little slow.
I ordered a large selection of sashimi -- uni, orange clam, special hamachi, toro. I figured as it all rolled in, I would be good.
I had gotten ankimo at Shoya before, but I didn't like it because it was so dry. I think they had forgotten the sauce. This time, the ponzu sauce was there, and it was delicious.
For unknown reasons, my order got lost at the bar. The chef at the far end of the bar noticed that I seemed to not be eating, yet not leaving, and made sure that I got my order. And then some items were missing and he continued to check in on me.
At some point, this showed up. I can't remember completely, but I believe it was grilled hamachi. It was rich and unctuous, though I remember feeling ill afterwards because I had already ordered everything I expected to eat.
Still a good meal. Tasty.
