Kansas

An unexpected trip brought us to Kansas. I had never been to Kansas. I had flown into Kansas City and turned straight into Missouri.

Kansas was mostly what I feared, food-wise. I had hoped that the reputation of good beef and Kansas City ribs stretched into Kansas. I don't really feel that is the case, unfortunately.

These are the only ribs that I had on the trip. It was at Cox Brothers BBQ and they claimed to have Kansas City, Memphis, and Carolina (no specific region listed even) BBQ there. So clearly without an alignment, they had no specialty. They also had pineapple in their cole slaw.

Nevertheless, it wasn't so bad. The beans were very good with lots of burnt ends and the brightness of bell peppers.

I thought the sauces all tasted basically the same.

There was one Mexican spot in the small town where we were staying. I ordered the carne asada and was pretty surprised that they were basically just the most meat I have ever seen in a taco and a small amount of "toppings" -- an onion-heavy pico.

The refried beans were pretty damn good.

We spent a whole day -- okay, I left halfway and then went back -- on the reservoir. it sounds better if you call it a lake. There were some folks cooking for the big ole group of us. Burgers and hot dogs and a selection of random salads and such.

We stayed through til it got dark. I skipped dinner because I had that Mexican meal up there so I was lucky enough to miss out on recooked burgers aka "hockey pucks" and half cooked brats.

It wasn't all bad. I got a couple decent pictures.

We walked out onto a little pier and were able to see a serious amount of stars.

There was also a bonfire which they took to lighting with lighter fluid. Bright!
