A Saturday in which...

... I have to make my own cocktail.

With Josh out of town, if I wanted my own drink, I had to make it myself.

It was a very cocktaily weekend. I had to hit three different liquor stores to snag only three of the four liquors I was looking for.

I made ice in the silicon trays and then learned you shouldn't stack multiple liquid trays.

Josh had emailed me a recipe, so I set out to make my drink.

First I measured out the Bulleit. No problem. Then I squeezed half a lemon. Except for stabbing myself in the kidney with the paring knife while walking to the table, no problem.

Then the simple syrup. The jar lives in a plastic baggie to keep the fridge clean. (Yay.) The jar itself was super sticky though. I will need to change it for a new one later. Those honey jars from Dekalb Farmers Market are a great size. Although, as we will learn, horrible for pouring. I was careful pouring, but I was nervous. Done. And then peach bitters. I got two drops out of the first dash but did the second anyway.

Got ice from the maker. Poured in my mix, tapped the glass on... and shake! I was nervous about the shake, probably because I chose to flip the shaker like I've seen. So I dripped a bit. So I went back to metal shaker on the bottom.

Put my little square ice in a glass, and double strain.

It doesn't look that bad. And since I haven't had much to eat today, it's pretty strong. I think two will put me in a good place.

Oh. I was going to work some more. Well, maybe not now.

mmm, booze. with the caveat that i have no idea what i'm talking about and what would be good for your situation... if simple syrup is hard to dispense without getting everywhere, it sounds like honey. we've started using syrup dispensers (ex: http://www.amazon.com/Tablecraft-Products-Honey-Syrup-Dispenser/dp/B0000CF5GX) for our honey and it's really helped with the mess.

Ah. Honey has a different sweetness and consistency, not to mention associated flavor depending on which type of honey you choose. Josh is a traditionalist -- which I have no problem with because I am too when it comes to cooking -- so we are white sugar simply syrup only people. Many people swear by demerara or even turbinado because of the added molasses taste, but ... it also adds a browner shade to an otherwise clear drink.

I suppose that's why we have gone with the jar in a bag but I think we need a better jar.
