We left the beach house one day earlier than everyone else to spend a day tooling around the city. For that first night, we met up with one of my friends at Nishino's (nishinorestaurant.com), which was supposed to be one of the better sushi spots in the city.
We met up on the earlier side. My friend, who is just two weeks away from her due date, is not eating raw fish, which explained why she was so generous to give her husband the opportunity to have some sushi.
We started off with oysters. I can't remember much about it, except that I was really pleasantly surprised at how good they were.
I got the albacore tuna tartare, which is made with ginger salsa, and this insane presentation of taro chips. I skipped the chips, never needing something to go along with my meat or fish.
It was okay. Not standout in any situation.
Josh and I ordered a sashimi platter for two. They asked what we ate, and we said everything. They asked how much we wanted, which I hadn't really expected. I estimated that we were used to having about 12-15 pieces at Taka.
When the plate arrived, I was kind of disappointed at how mainstream it was. All the normal characters were there. Nothing really stood out to me in terms of flavor, though the ikura was pretty good. I believe I'm really used to the standard of thicker fish for sashimi to bring out the texture.
I'm also really glad we have Taka nearby.
I asked them to fry my shrimp heads. They seemed surprised. Weird.
I still wanted more food. In the end, we decided to get some noodles. They had only cold somen on the menu, but they did do cold soba also so we got that. I know, nothing special. But I didn't want to spend money on more food that wouldn't feed or satiate me.
So I would say it was a pretty run-of-the-mill experience, one that was more expensive but not as satisfying as a visit to Taka. The good thing is that my friend said it wasn't up to her expectations either so that means that at least I don't have to be disappointed in Seattle sushi, just that one dinner.
