A week on the west coast

We spent a week out on the west coast hanging out about halfway between Portland and Seattle in the small beach town of Long Beach, Washington with a bunch of Josh's friends. It's definitely interesting to share space and meals with people you don't know or really share food relationships with.


Our first morning was a Sunday and our hosts suggested that we head out and meet at the Astoria Farmers Market, just over the line in Oregon. They had expressed that it was pretty small, so I was excited to see that it was three blocks jammed full of vendors.

We saw a lot of good things, but I didn't know how much cooking we would do, so I ended up with these three gorgeous peaches and a package of blueberries. These blueberries were more delicious than any other blueberries I've ever had. Just divine.


Following the farmers market, we looked around for a place for lunch and settled on Bosnian Drina Daisy (www.drinadaisy.com). They had a good Zagat rating.

I can't find the menu online but I remember that the ingredient list reminded me of the Greek htipiti, a red pepper and feta spread that Josh likes a lot. But I preferred this Bosnian spread, which was smoother and obviously feta-lacking.


For my dish, I got a slow roasted lamb of which the menu said you receive slices from all over. Score!

The lamb was delicious. Having a mixed salad was nice and refreshing and the fruit was a plus, too. I definitely enjoyed this meal.


On our way out to Astoria, I had noticed a few "local seafood" signs pointing towards the water's edge in Chinook. On the way back, I made Josh stop.


The albacore season had just started and they were butchering freshly caught albacore right there -- granted, their fileter had just quit so it was the owner doing a rather slow, not that impressive job with it.

Three pounds of fresh albacore -- $30. Hell yeah.


Brandon decided to sear it and finish it in the oven and slice it to go on a tapenade spread on toasted bread.

Not bad, but a little dry.


Behind our beach house was this path to the beach. It was about 1/4 mile down this path to the beach.


A Washington beach is definitely different than you would imagine, with the sand and sky blending colors and the whole thing misty and windier than you would have expected.


There wasn't much in the way of impressive food in Long Beach. I got a dozen local Wilapa oysters. They ended up being enormous! I only made it -- with difficulty -- through eleven of them without hurting myself. Then I was done for a while.


For one dinner, we headed over to The Depot (depotrestaurantdining.com/) which came highly recommended by a co-worker of Josh's. We were joined by two other couples and it was a great time.

I started off with these fried artichokes with romesco, which were okay, but perhaps too many of them. I was definitely jealous of others' razor clam chowder and crab mac and cheese. Wow.

For my main, I got the special ribeye with blue cheese butter. Somehow, I forgot to get a picture of it, though I was sure I had snapped it. I blame the alcohol.


For dessert, a flan. I think. Hard to remember.


Day two of fresh albacore. I got just a small one with the intention of eating it raw.


And raw I ate it. It was delicious.


Day three of raw albacore. It looked much better done.


It was also the start of coho salmon season so we bought one of those also.


Divine sashimi with soy. We feasted on it. This was the best batch.


Our last day at the beach house, we went horseback riding on the beach. Fun! I was sore after for a short bit.


It turned out we were right next to another pier. Too bad to find out the last day.

This place, OleBob's Galley Cafe (www.olebobs.com) got good ratings on Zagat. Looking back, I'm not sure they were that well deserved, but what's done is done.

I got their clam chowder, which was okay.


Josh got the fish tacos, which come with halibut. Nice.


We got these crab cakes, their signature dish, which were chock full of dungeness crab. Pretty good.


And remember those huge Wilapa oysters? I got them fried. Big, but I got through about six of these. Pretty good. But perhaps I'm tired of oysters now.
