For years, I had been hearing about Miso Izakaya, which I thought was located near Super H off Buford Highway. But then I learned it was in the Fourth Ward, which is kind of far from us, and I was sad.
But I kept an eye on the izayaka happenings and then heard about Shoya Izakaya, which some consider to be superior even. And that's the one that's next to Super H.
It was early on Sunday and we were hungry. I convinced Josh to head over there for dinner. It's pretty close by!
To start, Josh ordered oshinko, Japanese pickles. They were awesome.
I started off with the ankimo, which is served with three slices which are further sliced up. There is a ponzu in the bottom, but I found it a little hard to maneuver and I thought the dish was a bit dry overall. A good amount of seaweed, which seems to accompany most of the dishes, was a good foil for the monkfish liver though.
Since ankimo looks to be on their regular menu whereas Taka only serves it in the fall/winter, I could see myself filling my cravings in the warmer months.
Agedashi dofu. A good version.
Since it was our first time, we got a few of the yakitori to try. Here we have the octopus, which I found to be a bit chewy. Each of the yaki can be ordered either with sea salt or teriyaki glaze. We tended to go with the recommendation of our friendly server.
Pork belly. I found it fatty and a bit less meltingly tender than I tend to like it.
Chicken skin. Pretty hard to get off the skewer but my favorite by far of the three.
Josh ordered the Tokyo-style ramen which was soy-chicken-broth-based. The flavors definitely showed through. He finished it down to the last drop.
For me, the tonkatsu ramen which had a very porky, salty, creamy broth that really grows on you. This bowl of noodles is HUGE and I thought I would burst afterwards. The pork was delicious. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the bamboo shoots, but then again, I only like the thinly sliced ones.
The noodles were great with a good bite.
This was definitely a great find for us. It's close enough to hop over and the range of the menu practically guarantees that you'll find something you want, no matter what. We'll be back.
