It was a gorgeous Saturday afternoon. I had left Josh sleeping and gotten up to head to the farmers market and then run some errands -- renewing my card and then picking out some books at the library, buying some winterizing and house supplies at Ace Hardware (nothing dramatic, just some covers for the grills and some fall garden things), and getting my emissions done.
It was late in the day, and I was starving. Josh had already eaten so I figured I would hop over to Com for a banh mi or something quick. But Com was closed and I saw that Alison's was open so I headed over there. A co-worker had mentioned once that Alison's was good and I had read reviews about it in the past, knowing that those who went there seemed to really like it.
I was surprised when I walked it -- it looked far more elegant than I was expecting. I sidled up to the bar and asked if I could sit there for a quick lunch.
It turned out that my "server" was Alison herself. She was tending to some tasks and talked with me throughout my lunch. I found her to be quite delightful. Though the menu is relatively simple, it looks good, and I hope to return to try more of her food.
There were a few specials for lunch including this clam chowder. It was light and good, less cream and probably more potato pureed for texture. I liked it. Unfortunately, I dumped in the oyster crackers too early and later regretted it. They overstarched the soup. Tsk on me.
For lunch, I had another one of the specials: scallops and shrimp over penne. It originally comes with a cajun cream sauce but she felt it would be too heavy after the clam chowder. Up in the top left, you can see she brought me a small bowl of it to try and it was delicious. But she was right about the heaviness. So I got the white wine sauce instead.
The dish was great. And they gave me a half portion, which was very nice, and also good for me considering I barely was able to finish it all as it was. The scallops were cooked perfectly. The shrimp was perhaps a touch overdone. The broth was delicious.
I look forward to returning here again. It was straightforward, cooked to order, and they tend to cater to customers. I like it.
