I had a craving for oysters. This is nothing new. I haven't really had oysters in a long time so I am constantly craving them. When we set out this weekend, I got the clearance to go somewhere just for oysters. But there are surprisingly few places in the city (and Josh doesn't really care for Steamhouse sadly) so I wasn't sure where to go.
Finally, I turned to Crawfish Shack Seafood (http://www.crawfishshackseafood.com/) which a friend at work had recommended. I had seen it up on the hill while heading for pho or banh mi before, but was always doubtful. But it had been featured in the NYT and the reviews were good so... We headed out there and met G for lunch.
You order up front and the long line moves pretty slowly. You can order food by the pound or not. Since it was our first time, we definitely ordered too much.
We started off with two dozen oysters. They came plenty plump and with fresh cocktail sauce and horseradish. They were shucked well and rinsed off, but with plain water and not salt water. They were very bland gulf oysters and they did not satiate my need for oysters.
We also ordered two pounds of crawfish which came spicy enough to make my lips tingle. We learned later that if you only order crawfish, you get them immediately whereas if you get other stuff, you have to wait.
Crawfish Shack Seafood is a Vietnamese-run place and there was definitely a Vietnamese crowd. They came in and added salt, pepper, and more pepper or chile sauce to their crawfish, proclaiming that they wished it were spicier. Clearly, I am a wuss.
Also, two pounds is a lot. Especially when you got a lot of other stuff.
G ordered these boudin balls which were pretty tasty. She said that she isn't a fan of the fried goodness, so she had some trouble adjusting.
We also got an oyster po'boy. Josh liked it a lot. Perhaps I had eaten too much at this point. I thought it was okay.
G ordered the bulgogi po'boy which was advertised on the door. It came without fixin's. I'm not sure how she really enjoyed it, but she did go to the counter to ask for pickles, lettuce, and tomato to beef it up. Haha, no pun intended.
Lastly, G ordered beignets. They were very doughy and heavy. Not something to get again.
So overall, I thought it was a good place. For crawfish. And po'boys maybe. But not for oysters. Still craving oysters.
