A small local produce stand opened near our house maybe a month or so ago in the location of a former gas station. It's usually open when we leave the house, but always closed on the way home. Today was the first day that we were able to pass it when it was open.
Although they winced at my amateur "is everything organic?" question, they did respond that everything was grown naturally. No pesticides, they said, with produce from Florida all the way up to Georgia. Well, Florida is more local than California, to be sure. They get a new truck of fresh stuff every day.
As a note about the "is everything organic" question, I read somewhere that a farmer/chef (I hope it's not an insult to call someone that), and I want to say it was Dan Barber, said once in an interview that he would rather someone ask him how he raises his animals, what he feeds them, how they live instead of the misleading question of "is it organic?" I guess I should have known better.
We picked up:
1 head of green cabbage - $1
a basket of very pretty red tomatoes - $5
3 vidalia onions - $2
a bunch of thin asparagus (I like!) - $2
1 lb bag of shelled english peas - $3
Maybe. I really only know the price of the asparagus, cabbage, and onions. I asked about the tomatoes but apparently considered the price acceptable and moved on. The memory is the first thing to go, they say...
This does battle with my notion of joining the CSA. I like the situation of having too many options for local, fresh, and tasty produce.
