Loot

It's a nice feeling to come home from the market with bags of loot. Today was no exception. We headed to Indian Ridge first as usual and got some of these absolutely beautiful eggplant. Then instead of doing our usual round, I decided to head in the opposite direction and start the rest of the round at Burge. There, we got this nicely shaped butternut squash (I always try to get ones that look like they are well-shaped) and a salad mix of arugula, mizuna, tatsoi, and a couple other spicy salady items. Josh was very excited. Then we grabbed a slice of pizza each (Marguerite, what else?) and then got a pound and half of these great looking scuppernogs and muscadines from Hennessey Farms. Yum.

We spent some time talking to Suzanne at Riverview Farms. The chest freezer is busting full so we aren't really allowed to buy any more, but we bought two packages of pink lady peas anyway to freeze and also package of ribeyes for tonight. We also got two packages of dried oyster mushrooms at Flat Creek Lodge because this is their last weekend at the market. Their dried oysters are really good. The woman from Hope's Creek was handling the Flat Creek stand while we were there, so I promised I would try the pesto at Hope's Garden. The basic basil pesto is excellent but we keep a supply at home so it seemed irresponsible to buy that. The jalapeno pesto was good with a lingering clean taste of jalapeno (and a little spice at the end!) but I wasn't sure what I would use it on. And so, we settled on the red pepper pesto which also has capers and such. I see me topping it on pasta maybe or bruschetta. Lots of possibilities. They had a nice handout with ideas actually.

Lastly, we went to Pine St Market on the way home because they have a new smoked liverwurst! Except that I can't read and missed that it was actually coming out next weekend. So we hung out talking with Travis and Rusty for a while and Travis gave us samples of a few salamis -- fennel, hunter's loop, and ... something else -- and we decided to buy some Mexican chorizo to use in breakfast tortillas tomorrow and some Sweet Grass Green Hill. Yum. :)
