Somewhere, I think maybe on the Blissful Glutton's blog, J saw something about a Mexican sammich shop near the office. So when we were out near the office on a Saturday and looking for a bite to eat, he brought us to Las Tortas (5841 Roswell Rd.).
I had never been to a Mexican sammich shop before, so as we walked in, I looked at all the tables to see what good things the natives were eating. Mostly, there were sandwiches on the tables, though one table had a wide array of things including what looked like long open-face sandwiches. (Still haven't figured out what those were but maybe flautas based on the picture in the takeout menu.)
I ended up ordering the Yucateca torta which is filled with cochinita pibil, or sucking pig. You probably didn't know this, but one of J's favorite words is cochinita pibil. He also likes the word cotechino even though these two words/phrases aren't even from the same language, much less related. Anyway. Who can resist suckling pig?
J ordered three tacos. I think they were barbacoa, cochinita pibil, and pastor.
The suckling pig was very good. However, it wasn't until I had eaten almost the whole thing that I watched someone load up their sandwich with items from the fixin' bar. That's right: I ate mine as just pork and bread, not that I'm complaining. The salsas on the bar looked attractive and they are a real selection, not like the pitiful salsa bar that we saw at that taco place near the house.
I'm looking forward to going back and trying something else. Maybe we will split a sammich and get tacos each. A lot of people appeared to get the mango agua fresca. I like the orange jarritos myself, but it's also hard to turn down a coke in these circumstances.
