The General Muir

We had long been awaiting the opening of The General Muir (website), the latest opening from the West Egg people, but more importantly, where Chef Todd Ginsberg went after he left Bocado.

I first met Todd at a restaurant week dinner that Gena put together at Aria. We started eating at Bocado and fell in love with his food. Now he's moved on to a Jewish deli, and it's just as delicious.

Since they opened, we've actually been there three times, all for lunch/brunch, and those are the pictures below.

Visit one. We sat at the bar. I started off with a bloody caesar. I can't remember much about it except that it had Tito's and the house bloody mary had Smirnoff. Ever the snob, I went with Tito's.

It was really good. In fact, I believe I got one every time I went. It also comes with a tasty olive.

It was our first visit, so how could we not get the basics? Josh got this pastrami. Delicious, he said. And the pickle: perfect. You can see he got gypped a bit on the pickle. I got the other half so I shared. Yes, I'm a very nice person.

And for me, the reuben. I asked for extra russian dressing on the side. You can see my fat half of the pickle. :)

Here's a closeup of the reuben. It was really good. The corned beef was cut way thicker than I'm used to and, as all the reviews say, it is quite fatty. But that wasn't what keeps me from ordering it again.

It's huge! It was a struggle for me to finish it, and I'm not even sure if I did finish it. And I hadn't even had any starters.

Still, looking at the picture, damn, I wish I had one right now.

Josh also got a side of fries. Good, but nothing to write home about. We are so spoiled.

Lauren, from Miller Union, is the pastry chef at General Muir. So we got a slice of her carrot cake to go. It wasn't until hours later that we ate it, and it was delicious.

And then we gave into indulgence. Josh got this espresso.

And I got this chai latte. A little light on the chai, but good amnyway.

Visit two. We sat at the bar again. Detect a trend? I think I got the bloody caesar again. And then a coffee because I was a little green. It was delicious.

So this is the chopped chicken liver. And it is AMAZING.

I have to say that again, it's the best damn chicken liver I've put into my mouth.

There are other chicken liver pates in the city. A smooth potted chicken liver from Drew Belline is good. In fact, I used to think it was great. Now they are not good enough. This chicken liver is AWESOME.

When Todd stopped by to say hi, I raved about it. Chicken liver, cognac, duck fat. Crazy good.

The bread, I could take or leave. But it's not fair because I like to eat liver and cheese and all that other stuff without the bread. I have noticed in our last visit that they give more bread now though.

Damn, that's some good chicken liver.

While I was mooning over my chicken liver, Josh was mooning over this pickle plate. Cucumbers, a half sour, green tomatoes, ginger, cabbage, beets, fennel. Josh was so happy that each of the pieces were pickled in their own solution and then brought together in one plate.

I am sure that as time goes on and we have tried everything, the chicken liver and the pickles will always show up.

Josh got the lamb sausage, which comes with eggplant spread, harissa slaw, and a zatar hot dog bun. I deliberately didn't get this because of the harissa slaw and I was right: it was pretty spicy. And good, as I remember. He liked it.

He got a side of potato salad to go with it. Kind of mediocre, especially compared to how awesome everything else is.

I had wanted to get the Avenue D which called for lox and salmon roe but they were out of both. So they recommended the Avenue A which comes with noa, schmear, avocado, grapefruit, cucumber, a red onion brunoise, and dill.

It wasn't my first choice, but it was pretty tasty. When Todd came over to ask about it, I told him it was very tasty, but that I liked my bagel toasted. He was horrified and ran over to the bagel area to chastise the staff. Josh told me to stop spinning up trouble.

I'm fairly certain that they did toast the bagel (which they claimed and Todd told them to toast it more) but they made it more than 15 minutes before they served it to me. Well, this is why you don't order all at once.

I had also ordered the matzo ball soup, after reading such great things about it. The timing was odd. I was already a few bites into the second part of my bagel and so, at that point, was hoping that it would come after I finished my bagel altogether. But it didn't. Well, that's what I get for not specifying my order timing.

The chicken broth in this soup was so clear and delicious. There was a nice mirepoix brunoise in the soup. Josh said the soup tasted like mine, which is way nice of him to say, but mine is not nearly as good. The big matzo ball was soft and tender. This was good, but wow, I was full after finishing it.

On we go to visit three. We started off with these latkes, which Todd called latkees. They were great. Toasty, delicious, with a kiss of onion flavor. With apple sauce and sour cream on top. So good.

Josh got the burger which is absolutely huge. He was eating it for a long time. But he said it was good.

For me, the pastrami hash. It was delicious.

So we've had some really awesome food at The General Muir. I already have some favorites. I can tell we are going to come here a lot. So glad to be eating Todd's food again.
