We've decided to get up a bit earlier for the market (assuming we can swing it) so that we can take better advantage of what's at the market. Summer is definitely in full swing and with the recent rain that we've had, it seems the high heat and heavy but short thunderstorms are good for harvest.
After we got back from the market, I made tomato sammiches (and one rather unsuccessful cucumber sammich) and now I'm blogging from the couch while watching Wimbledon. We will run errands soon and then go to dinner at L+H's. I'm frying chicken.
I'm not really a big bread person. I like really good bread, but I'm not very good at eating it when we have it or even buying it because I'm afraid it will just go bad. I'm one of those people who saves things for too long. With the H&F Bread Co at the market, it's really stupid for us not to buy bread. Since we went to the beach, I've been buying bread and last week, the tomato sandwiches were wonderful on it. So I bought another pain au levain again with the purpose of serving as my tomato sandwich foundation. I toasted it a little bit more, and it was wonderful.
We also bought a fried pie because I loves them. This one is for me. I'm going to eat it soon so I don't forget it like I did last time. No reason to save it.
The arugula this year has been very peppery, too peppery for me. I like getting it from Hennessey because they double wash it so that it can go from bag to plate. But I was thinking maybe it was the type of arugula they were using, so we specifically went to Stoke to get arugula -- and I know their arugula lasts a week in the fridge. Well, I washed it and it was very dirty and it was also very peppery, though still edible. Guess it doesn't matter where you get it.
Michael at Indian Ridge had a good amount of chanterelles. We bought two cartons. With all the rain, chanterelles have burst through with abandon. We're certainly thrilled to have them so early. We also bought some more delicious rosegold potatoes from McMullan and some blackberries from Burge. I think the blackberries are all destined to become fizzes.
Burge is still our first stop every week. I was looking over their CSA lists and was thinking we really could have subscribed to theirs, though then we would have no reason to go to the market and patronize all the farms we like. So here we got some good-looking tomatoes, both big ones and some small zebra types. They need a little time to ripen. We also got some potatoes, a good handful of okra, and a couple squash.
In other tomato news, I have no tomatoes. I feel like they are not going to sprout. Perhaps next year, we will forget going to the farmers market and just buy from pike or something.
That's right: three veg pictures. That's a lot of market loot. We got these beautiful carrots from Indian Ridge also. Plus some more beautiful okra, zucchini, and haricot verts from Hennessey. Those gorgeous tomatoes are also from Hennessey; I'm so surprised they were still there when we arrived but I snatched them right up. And then those cucumbers are from McMullan. Josh likes the seedless kind.
So we are looking forward to cooking this week as always. We finally ate through everything we needed to except some onions, some baby red onions, and potatoes that we always have on hand. Josh will finish the plums in some drinks tonight. I did find some hidden carrots in the veg drawer and I have no idea when they were from. I thought we finally finished the last of the carrots last week. Well, maybe carrots tomorrow.
