Catchup

Last weekend, we took it easy at the market because Josh was going out of town for three days. The thing about going to the market is that 1) it's not cheap and 2) you really want to eat the food that you bought so that it's more horrifying if you have to throw something away if it goes bad. I mean, no one wants to throw away food, but when it's a mealy pale Florida tomato in January, it probably wasn't that big a loss anyway.

Anyway. We have gotten a lot better about never throwing out vegetables. We typically have three vegetables per meal -- which is a pretty good balance -- at least during the summer when the market is so plentiful.

Last Saturday, we picked up broccoli from both Hennessey and McMullan. I really love the smoky charry taste of broccoli grilled on the Egg. I think Josh is about tired of it, so he is probably glad that we have what is probably the last of the broccoli harvest today. We also picked up a Hennessey cauliflower, which I plan to parboil and then Egg. The cherry tomatoes are from McMullan and are very sweet and tasty. I pop a couple in my mouth here and there. I also put a bowl out when we eat to add a fourth veg. We also got a mixture of potatoes and blackberries from Burge. We had paid for some sugar snaps, which were the last of the season and I was so excited for, but I forgot to put them in the bag. I'm pretty sad about that. We also got arugula from Hennessey.

For dinner, we grilled some Riverview Farms bratwurst that we got in the meat CSA like in 2009. They were still in great condition. I slathered mine with the German mustard we get at Patak. I also grilled up the Hennessey broccoli and zucchini and Burge potatoes.

Our blackberry bush is taking out most of the front walk and I'm happy to let it. This was our first harvest last weekend. They are very sweet and delicious. The blackberry thorns are brutal though. The plant has grown a lot this year and it looks like we will be able to harvest for a long time. Hooray!
