And now, a break from recounting our trip to CA for a recap of our market shopping. We did use our brand new canvas bag that we picked up at the Berkeley market. :)
It was pretty cold when we set out for the market today -- 35 degrees on the outdoor temp gauge. It warmed up to 40 while we were out and it was sunny and crisp. We got to the market later than usual -- after 10 -- and the market was relatively quiet, but the stalls looked like maybe those who are dedicated came by earlier.
We stopped off at the Yoder stall first and picked up the bigger turnips on the left along with a bunch of Russian kale, which was explained as being sweeter than normal kale. In fact, we got a recipe for chiffonaded Russian kale with lemon juice and olive oil, much how we eat arugula. Not sure if we will try it that way. We also picked up the other two bunches of radishes which I plan to pickle, sweet potatoes (had some of those roasted last week and they were fantastic) plus the sunchokes at the Burge stall. The heirloom okra is from Farmer Jeff.
Since there was a frost this morning, it will be the last of the delicates, including okra.
Here we have more things that we got from Burge: the first of the arugula from their hothouse, sweet peppers which I'll saute with the okra, a pile of okra, and eggplant. This will be the last of the eggplants, too. We also have a pile of habaneros from Green Ola that I'll make into Rick Bayless' habanero hot sauce, plus broccoli leaves from Farmer Jeff.
We also picked up a whole uncut chicken and chicken feet from Heritage Farms. This is the first we've bought from them, though I've been keeping an eye on them since they first came to the market. Tentatively, we are thinking to go out to their farm the week of Turkey Day to pick up some goodness. Perhaps we will be able to score some duck sometime. And lamb in the spring. :)
