Restaurant Eugene

The night I got back from my trip to Boston, J and I met a friend at Restaurant Eugene for dinner. Sadly, this was so long ago that I only have my notes to go off of. Normally, I can look at the meal rundown and remember the taste of dishes but here, they are totally lost which is probably because I was completely unimpressed.

To start off with, I had the diver scallops and pork belly served on broccoli puree. The diver scallop was delicious but the pork belly was shitty with no flavor and the broccoli puree was just plain weird. J started off with the sweetbreads with butternut squash puree and guanciale. While good, it's hard to compare to the recent memory of Prune.

For a main, I had the squab with fingerling potatoes, and butter beans. The squab was bland and the dish overall was just way too heavy. The "game jus" was nasty. J's main was braised short ribs with maitake mushrooms, baby bok choy, and hakurai turnips. It was good, but this is something that we can make at home.

For dessert, I had toffee ice cream and some apple thing that was way too sweet. J had a disgusting play on pb+j which had a doughy undercooked housemade doughnut served with a peanut butter sauce similar to one that I make when I make sesame noodles. Absolutely appalling.

I was disappointed with Restaurant Eugene. I would go to Holeman & Finch to see how that is though. Perhaps one day...
