Wow, I'm behind

It's kind of embarrassing how much I have to post about. Over the last month, J went out of town -- clearly this calls for culinary ... rebellion? Then we went on a trip together to New England for a friend's wedding. We stayed for a week to visit with my sister, my brother-in-law, and my niece, who is actually the most adorable child I have ever seen. (I know I'm biased as her aunt, but it may actually be true.) Then we came back for a few days before I headed out of town again for a conference in Boston and I stayed to hang out with my cousins.

By the time all that was said and done, we had been eating out non-stop for a month. You really do get sick of eating out. So shortly (actually, it's going to take me a long time to format the pictures and type it all up so it may take a longer time), I'll be waxing lyrical about all the great food I had while I was traveling.

It is nice to be home though and cooking again. It's still hard to come home late and then start a meal, but at least I'm not working every night anymore. Plus, the holidays are coming up and with that the season for braising and hearty meals. It's my favorite time of the year.

Along those lines, we've decided to not have turkey for Turkey Day this year. I know it's horrible, but both of us really don't like turkey. We've suffered through it because I like my rice and chestnut stuffing, but it's really an excessive amount of waste. So we are going to do a venison rack and then all the normal sides. I may try the rice and chestnut stuffing simmered with some fowl stock so I'm not totally cut off, but I'm still figuring it out.

I'm in a nice wild mushroom phase which generally means that we are having them every week. We also have a lot of butternut squash. Clearly, it's time to celebrate because Autumn is here!
