There is a South Indian restaurant near us called Madras Saravana Bhavan -- http://www.madrassaravanabhavan.net -- that is reported to be the best Indian place in the city. It's actually vegetarian South Indian. I don't know if those two things usually go hand in hand, but I can attest that the one time that J and I went several years ago, we were the only non-Indian people there. Also, we mysteriously got a table in like ten minutes despite the very long line outside.
About two years ago, another Indian restaurant opened up at the other end of the strip mall where MSB is called Bollywood Masala. (Their menu states their website is http://www.bollywoodmasala.com/ but you will likely find, as I did, that there is no website there.) Although J and I had never been, I noticed it often. The other day when J was doing his emissions nearby, I took the opportunity to stroll by and check out 1) their takeout menu and 2) the all-you-can-eat lunch buffet. They are owned by the same people!
The buffet probably changes but on the Saturday that we were there, there was lamb kofta curry, chicken vindaloo, chana masala, aloo bonda, a spinach/corn dish, and a few other things.
From the first taste, I was really amazed at how rich and smooth the curries were. Two plates-full and one very large mango lassi later, I didn't think I would be able to waddle out of there.
While I still love Zyka, our standby, I certainly see myself taking advantage of the richly flavored $10 buffet on weekends. I should also note that afterwards, J and I crashed for at least a couple hours. MSG perhaps?

or maybe we passed out because we gorged ourselves like pigs.
South Indian is typically, but not always, vegetarian. There is a good vegetarian Indian buffet on L'ville Hwy., just behind the mall, called Udipi. Reviews here: http://atlanta.citysearch.com/review/2885736
However, our absolute favorite place is Panahar. They are technically a Bangladeshi place, not Indian, but you wouldn't guess it from their menu items. Lots of crossover, obviously. Mirza, the owner, is awesome. Nice guy, genuinely interested in pleasing the customers. This place is not totally vegeterian. They have meat and non-meat items on the menu. Here is their website: http://www.panahar.com/home.aspx
In fact, Michelle and I want to take you there as a thank you for looking after the cat. They usually run a special menu around any holiday that's always fantastic. It's a great way to try something new. I'll message you to set up a time. :)
