It's been a while since I posted about Saturday market, mostly because we haven't been in weeks. Once I was back at the market, buying great-looking local produce and talking with the farmers, it was easy to remember why we love going. But on other mornings, and even when they alarm went off this morning, it's been nice to sleep late or travel or whatever it was we were doing.
We stocked up on meat from Heritage Farm. We pre-ordered a whole rabbit several weeks ago and were finally able to make it to pick it up. We also got a 3 lb leg of lamb, a preview of the lamb that we have on order for later in October. We also picked up four bone-in ribeyes which I ordered special. They are very thin, much different, from what we are used to, but with the bone-in, I'm excited to try it and to try Heritage beef.
I'm looking to keep pretty local on meat this fall/winter and that means figuring out who my farmers will be now. I spoke with the lady at Greendale and found out that they do quite a selection of meats also. We also spoke with the guys at Many Fold (both in person and by email). I really want to order 1/2 lamb from them, despite the fact that I've never had their lamb before, but I don't want to go to the farm to pick it up. Call me lazy. If I'm going (and by I, I mean Josh) to drive out an hour for meat, I want to get more than just one meat. Anyway, I made my plea and if they decide to let me pick up at the market, they will let me know.
We didn't really have an idea of how much we were going to buy, and it seemed like it wasn't very busy either customer-wise or at the stalls, but we ended up buying a lot!
From McMullan, we picked up four great-looking corn and some of their delicious rosegold potatoes. We also got a good-sized spaghetti squash and delicata squash from Riverview Farms.
From Indian Ridge, we got these tomatoes -- the only farmer whom we saw with tomatoes this week. We also got this awesome hen of the woods, which we lucked out on when I asked Michael if he had any mushrooms hanging out in the back. It always pays to ask! We also got some great shitakes from Hennessey.
We got a pint each of muscadines and scuppernogs from Hennessey, which Josh was so super stoked about. We also god some Edam cheese from Greendale which went incredibly well with our eggs this morning. We also got some Chinese epgplant from Burge and an assortment of peppers at Riverview.
Lastly -- see, I said it was a lot -- we got the rest of the okra that Hennessey had, filet beans from McMullan, and poblanos from Burge. Oh also some shishitos from Burge. I'm going to char the poblanos on the Egg and freeze em for use later.
