I haven't been cooking much. It happens sometimes. Usually it means that either I'm super busy or just distracted or just ... sad. That sounds sad to say. Two weeks ago, I didn't do much cooking and then Saturday morning I was just tired and didn't feel like going to the market. Last week, I was busy at work so I came home late. We ate some frozen Via Elisa pasta (almost eaten all of it by now) with a relatively quick heirloom tomato sauce (can't let those go to waste). We went out to eat a lot. Josh had a late conference call one night so I heated up a frozen sausage ragu. Reminded me why I like to freeze things.
So this weekend, Josh made me go to the market. Early. Like so early we had to wait for the opening bell at Peachtree Road. That was a first for us. We're home all week and the loot is good.
First off, some Green Ola squash blossoms that we brought to T+L's place yesterday. They were stuffed with a mixture of herbs, lemon juice, and chevre, then deep fried in the lightest best Thomas Keller Ad Hoc batter. Deliciously delicious.
Next, we have a bag of arugula which ... hm, I don't remember putting away. I will have to go look for that. I like to buy Hennessey's because it's ready to plate. Then we have some heirloom okra and a patty pan squash from Indian Ridge. We also have some green zebra tomatoes from Burge. Josh had these in a salad at No. 246 and totally loved them.
We hit Hennessey first. I have to say that I haven't seen them with so much stuff ever, which goes to show that getting to the market early really makes a difference.
Here we have some brown turkey figs, gorgeous cherry tomatoes, blueberries, and three asian pears. Hopefully, none of them will go to waste. Some of the figs were smushed when I took them out of the bag. I don't know if it's from setting the bag down on the ground or they were like that in the basket. Hm.
More Hennessey loot. Filet beans. Heirloom and pink beauty tomatoes. Normally about this time, we were buying far more tomatoes than this, but I'm not sure how much was going to waste. Now we are being more conservative, but I'm bummed to not be taking more advantage of tomato saeason.
There are four little tomatoes I also got from Indian Ridge. They were just so cute.
Lastly, we picked up a whole chicken and pre-ordered a rabbit from Heritage Farms. They have the best chicken.
Also, I remembered that this week's Riverview email said that they had the last of the sweet corn at this week's market. How could we have missed the entire season? So we bought 12 corn for $5. Yums. Corn will be in everything this week.
So we have a ton of good stuff this week. We happen to have less meat in the freezer. It's down mostly to odds and ends like sausages from the Riverview CSA and large cuts like hams and pork shoulder. It's a challenge to eat on a weeknight, but hopefully we'll continue to make a dent. Then I don't feel badly about buying new meat. :)
Til next week.
