Sometimes dinner is an exercise in "we need to eat this from the farmers market before it goes bad" so it seems a little unbalanced in its offerings. And so it was that night.
We had a kobe coulotte from Star, which is one of our favorite cuts to eat rare, as you can see. Then I steamed some eggplant spears and served it a la Cecelia Chang, with a spicy soy/black vinegar sauce but I added a little sesame oil which I think gives it a rounded nuttiness. I had also cooked up a rather large batch of cannelini beans, which I tossed with some olive oil and kosher salt. Then another serving of eggplant, but this one was sauteed with smashed garlic. And in the center, what else but a pile of arugula dressed with lemon juice, olive oil, s+p. And there's a dollop of horseradish cream too. Yums.
So we headed to the market Saturday morning. I know you are surprised, but we did skip it last weekend to sleep in and sleeping in was SO glorious. But once you get out of the habit of getting up and going, life gets sadder. We end up eating out more. The cycle continues.
I had planned to make some ribs because E mentioned fried rice and I thought, hey, I could use some ribs too! So I'll make some ribs and then fried rice and bring him and K some. But anyway, Riverview Farms had included in their weekly update that they would have lots of ribs so we headed the clockwise way and started with Burge.
At Burge, we picked up the unshelled lima beans and a bag of arugula. Then we headed to Riverview to pick up the ribs and I bought two packages, not really knowing what I would get. These are the longer side of the ribs and they are folded over a bit, so one package is really all I needed. I put the second into the freezer. Yeah, the freezer I said that I would not put anything else in.
Oh, an aside. I took one of my sausage ragus from the chest freezer on Friday and defrosted that for an incredibly easy and delicious (though a little on the late side) dinner. I still have a little sauce, probably enough for me to toss on pasta for lunch. This is why I freeze the stuff in the first place, but I never really defrost it. I opened some minor space in the chest freezer. But mostly, I didn't get to dig for the Via Elisa sweet potato ravioli that is buried in there somewhere. Tsk.
Anyway, after Riverview, we headed to Hennessey which has become one of our favorite vendors. There we got the muscadines and scuppernogs, which Josh says are the best of anywhere we have bought them. Then a bunch of Tuscan kale which, while it looks beautiful, has a definite poo aroma. Yeah. And we also got a handful of beautiful shitakes. Lastly, we headed to Indian Ridge and got some of these gorgeous lil eggplants.
Yesterday, we were supposed to make the ribs with the shitakes and eggplant and then have the other stuff tonight. But instead, we ended up at The Sound Table. Now I'm not sure what to make tonight since we are busy for dinner for four nights this week.
Well, definitely ribs. Not sure what else.
