We first heard about The Mercantile from our friend M because he gets their weekly newsletter. Then our friend G reinforced the recommendation saying that she had mentioned to the owners that we would be stopping by. So we headed over there a couple days ago to check it out.
The Mercantile is located right on the corner of Dekalb Ave and Clifton Rd. It's about a block up from the Flying Biscuit and where Gato de Noche used to be.
I was pleased at the selection that I saw at T.M. -- fresh local and organic vegetables, an assortment of good cheeses, and some select goodies like Bonne Maman's peach jam (J's favorite). The meat case was relatively bare looking but was filled with vacuum sealed duck breasts (like eight packages of two breasts each!), 2 ox foie gras portions, and some beef tenderloin. A quick chat with owner Samantha revealed that they can, as G said, order anything we needed with a couple days' advance notice and that she had four Georgia quail in the freezer at the moment.
I am a sucker for quail, so we bought all four (1 3/8 lb @ $7.99/lb). More expensive than we usually pay, but split breast and likely higher quality. We will see. And we will place our next special order here.
In other news, I'm sad to report that Matsuri has closed. We really enjoyed the sushi here. At least we found Taka.
