Kool Korners

An update: it's definitely closed.

Apparently, the owner closed it due to health reasons. A new owner is taking over that whole block in the next week or so. No idea what the plans are but I bet it includes demolition and a new building.

I read somewhere that the former owner is looking at consulting at a sammich shop in Dunwoody and they will serve his exact Cuban sammiches. I can't remember the name, but I googled it and came up with nothing. I can hope that it goes through. Dunwoody is near enough to the office.

In other news, Michael Tuohy has sold Woodfire Grill to two guys who most recently were handling Loca Luna. They are keeping the mission, the kitchen team, and the executive chef. Since J and I have pretty much thought it went downhill for the last couple years in terms of service and food quality, I guess Woodfire will stay on our "sad but no" list.

In other news, we went to Floataway Friday night after a really really long week. The menu was so tempting that we had to stare at it for a long time. Hanger steak, cioppino, quail, sweetbreads, and crab cakes. I finally narrowed it down to the quail, with a special request for a sweetbread app. It didn't work, but I had to try. The quail was good, but I can make as good at home. The grits that came with it were overly salted and cheesy. Still a good meal though. J got the cioppino. A spicy, saffron-laced broth with a wide assortment of perfectly cooked seafood. He didn't seem to like the broth too much, but the grouper (huge and awesome!) and scallop (bigger than the chorizo!) were awesome. We rounded out the meal with a peach souffle. That was awesome also. Oh, J started with a corn soup that he loved. Thwarted at my attempt for a customized sweetbread app (that I didn't really expect to get), I had the caprese. I miss the zucchini blossoms. =(

I told JS that I would bring her some fried rice, so tomorrow we've planned to go to Super H. Perhaps we will have a mostly Asian food week. I have a flounder in the freezer that I really need to cook. The last time I made fried rice, I used Morton's as always but without iodine. Who knew it made such a difference? I guess I should make sure I have some iodized salt before I drag J all the way out to Super H. Can't wait until the Super H at Buford Highway opens. If I have my timing right, I think it's supposed to open in January. Much of the shopping center there has already been built. Hooray!
