I recently went on a trip up to the land of cold, and one of the magazines that I brought with me is the Best of 2007 issue of Atlanta Magazine. I read a small feature on Oakhurst where the author referenced an "overly-hyped" Decatur taqueria and mentioned that a non-crowded small joint in Oakhurst was just as good, if not better. Well, the aforementioned "overly-hyped" Decatur taqueria is not overly-hyped, in my not-so-humble opinion. Taqueria Del Sol is one of our favorite places to eat and we are always extremely happy when we go there. (Note: we prefer the Decatur location.)
I should have taken this snide comment regarding Taqueria as a hint that I probably should not take this review to heart, but when we were driving home from the airport on a Monday night (Taqueria Del Sol is closed Mondays) and I had just read this review, I thought, hey, why not?
And so we found ourselves in Oakhurst in the prior home of Sweet Devil Moon ordering up some tacos. The tacos come wrapped in foil (pictured above) and so all the steam collects and makes your tacos completely soggy. J insists that they also steam their tortillas instead of a nice toasting which would contribute to the sogginess. The flavors were bland and unimpressive. I did like that one of my tacos (it's blended in my memory now) had grilled veggies, but I disliked the flavors so much that I ate all the meat out with a fork and left the rest.
And so, no more recommendations from Atlanta Magazine for us. It's time to renew, so I guess it's time to cut that one loose.
