While J and I were in NYC, our friend N took us to a great place for Japanese food. I wish I could remember the name. Originally, we were planning to go to Sobaya for noodles, but they couldn't seat our large party together and in a reasonable time. So we headed off to... wherever it was.
It had been a long time since I had had nabeyaki udon. I had forgotten the silkiness and richness of the broth, the smoothness of the noodles. It prompted me to pick up several Japanese cookbooks at the library as well as a Vietnamese cookbook in unbiased account of my love of pho.
Today, J and I went to the Asian market and made the biggest all-Asian grocery run ever to stock up. We bought everything from bonito and kombu to pork dumplings and edamame, green tea and rice sticks to earthenware pots and fried tofu. Needless to say, I had to rearrange the entire pantry and expand the "Asian shelf."
I can't wait to try out some of these new recipes!
