I'm sad to announce that Kool Korners, my beloved spot for Cuban sammiches, has closed.
The reports are not specific, but I read one hopeful post that the owner may be looking for a new location. I guess the rent went up at the old spot.
In other news, J and I found a new spot for pizza called Shorty's (http://shortys-pizza.com/. There's one in the Toco Hill's shopping center and one down Lawrenceville Highway. They do a pretty thin crust, "Decatur-style" they call it. It's crispy and pretty good. Their toppings are pretty good too -- good sausage, caramelized onions, artichokes, etc. The large salads are really huge. The caesar is lightly dressed -- seemingly with the good stuff, olive oil, lemon juice, parmesan (I didn't notice any egg) and also white anchovies. Tasty and close. The plain cheese pizza is pretty decent though not very filling. But I guess that's what you get when you order just cheese. I don't like my pizza piled too high with things though.
They close at 10pm, but we arrived one night at 9.40ish and still got served. We've gone twice now and our waiter, Ted, has been pretty amusing and fun to talk to. I'm glad to have a new place to go that's pretty close by and not a chain.
