CSAs

J and I have been trying to buy more local food, especially produce. It really does taste better, but sometimes I can't help but look at the cost and wonder if there is a more economical way.

I've been looking at some of the Georgia Organics stuff we got from Joe at Star Provisions this weekend and am thinking (again) about joining a CSA. The ones that are closest to us appear to be Gaia Gardens, Spruill Green Market, and TaylOrganic in Ellenwood, Ga.

TaylOrganic is the one I know least about since I researched CSAs last year but didn't think to look outside Atlanta. They have multiple pickup points and they also will bring pickups to Morningside on Saturday mornings. I really like that they have fruit CSAs also though it looks a little pricey. I think a 1/2 share would be sufficient for us.

Spruill is right near our offices so that would, in theory, be good. They are also a no-commitment CSA so in theory, you can skip a week if you want. Of course, all their shares are full through the fall so I guess that is out of the question.

Gaia Gardens is really the one that I have the most trouble finding information on. I'm not sure why it appears to be so hard to find information on this CSA. Maybe it is only restricted to the East Lake Commons folks.

Anyway, my main reason for bringing all this up is to ask if any of you have past or current experiences with CSA. I do get a little concerned when I read the lists of vegetables and see multiple entries that I have never heard of or wouldn't begin to know how to cook. However, I do look forward to expanding our veggie palate, as we did begin to use rutabagas this year.
